How to choose the right eyeglass lenses:

Features and benefits of eyeglass lens materials:

  • Glass lenses. All eyeglass lenses made from glass were first used for vision correction.
  • Glass lenses are a great optics choice, but they can be heavy and break easily. This could cause serious damage to the eye, or even complete loss. Glass lenses are not widely used in eyeglasses because of these issues.
  • Plastic lenses. The first lightweight plastic eyeglass lens was introduced in 1947. They were made from a plastic called CR-39.
  • CR-39 plastic is still a popular choice for eyeglass lenses because of its lightweight (about half that of glass), excellent optical quality, and low cost.
  • Polycarbonate lenses. The first polycarbonate lenses for safety glasses were introduced in the 1970s. Polycarbonate lenses were popularized in the 1980s and later in that decade.
  • Polycarbonate was originally developed for helmet visors in the United States Air Force. It is also used for “bulletproof” glass for banks and other safety applications. Because it is lighter than CR-39 plastic and has a greater impact resistance, it’s a popular material for safety glasses, eyewear for children, and eyewear for sports.
  • Trivex, a lightweight lens material for eyeglasses that has similar impact-resistant properties to polycarbonate was introduced in 2001.
  • High-index plastic lenses. High-index plastic lenses have been introduced by many lens manufacturers in the last 20 years to meet the growing demand for lighter, thinner eyeglasses. These lenses are lighter and thinner than CR-39 lenses.

Eyeglass lens treatments:

After you have selected your lenses, it is time to consider the best lens treatments for you.

The following lens treatments are essential for the best-looking, most comfortable and durable glasses:

  • Anti-scratch coating. All lightweight eyeglass lenses materials (see table), have surfaces that are much softer and more susceptible to scratches and abrasions.
  • Polycarbonate is the softest and most impact-resistant eyeglass lens. For adequate durability, all plastic lenses and high-index plastic lenses must have an anti-scratch coating applied by the factory.
  • Modern anti-scratch coatings, also known as scratch coats or hardcoats, can make eyeglass lenses almost as scratch-resistant than glass. If you aren’t careful about your glasses, or if your children have eyeglasses to buy, inquire about lenses that offer a warranty against scratches for a certain period.
  • Anti-reflective coating Anti-reflective coatings make all eyeglass lenses more beautiful. AR coatings reduce reflections from lenses, particularly at night. AR coatings make your lenses almost invisible so that you can maintain eye contact with others and aren’t distracted from reflections in your lens. AR-coated lenses have less chance of glare spots in photos.
  • High-index lenses require anti-reflective coatings. The refractive index of a lens material determines how much light it reflects. High-index lenses can reflect 50 percent more light than CR-39 lenses. This causes significant glare if AR coating is not applied.
  • UV-blocking treatment. The cumulative exposure to UV radiation from the sun over a lifetime has been linked with age-related problems such as cataracts and macular damage.
  • People should start protecting their eyes from the sun’s harmful rays as early as possible. Polycarbonate lenses and most high-index plastic lenses are protected against UV rays 100 percent. This is due to the absorptive properties of the lens material.
  • However, CR-39 lenses require an additional coating to offer the same UV protection as other lenses.
  • Photochromic treatment. This lens treatment allows eyeglass lenses to automatically darken in the sun’s UV or high-energy visible light (HEV) rays. It then turns to clear indoors.
